Frequently Asked Questions About the Course

1. Is Team Development Essentials enough to start working with teams, or do I need the full certification?

Team Development Essentials is designed to give you a strong, practical foundation to begin working with team leaders to better support their teams.

Many participants start applying what they learn during the program, using the frameworks, tools, and practicum experience to support real client work. You’ll learn how to structure conversations, work with team dynamics, and begin engaging teams more confidently.

The Practitioner level builds on this by teaching you to coach alongside teams, going deeper into complex team systems and longer-term engagements.

If your goal is to get started and build confidence, Essentials is enough. If you want to work at a more advanced, organizational level over time, the full certification pathway through Practitioner supports that progression.

2. How do I know if this is the right time for me to join?

This program is most valuable when you’re at a point where you want to expand your impact beyond individual coaching or leadership development.

Many coaches join when they notice a pattern: leaders grow, but the same challenges persist at the team level. Others join when clients begin asking for support with teams, and they want a structured way to respond.

If you’re starting to think more systemically about your clients or recognize this impact this can have, it’s usually the right time.

3. What types of teams can I coach after becoming certified? Does this apply if I’m an internal or external coach?

You can apply systemic team coaching across a wide range of teams, including leadership teams, non profit teams, cross-functional teams, and smaller business teams.

The approach is designed to work in real organizational contexts, so whether you’re an internal coach working within a company or an external coach working with clients, it can be applied directly to the teams you already support.

Many coaches begin by working with coaching the leaders of teams they already have access to, such as leadership groups, project teams, or stakeholder groups, and then expand from there.

What matters most is not the size or type of team, but the challenges they are facing, such as alignment, decision-making, accountability, and stakeholder relationships.

4. How quickly can I expect to see a return on my investment?

The return on team development is typically tied to how you apply it in your current work.

Some participants begin using elements of the approach immediately with existing clients, which can shift the scope and depth of their engagements. Others use the certification to reposition their practice toward team-level work over time. Many of our coaches also begin co coaching and cross referring each other to expand their opportunities and practice.

Team coaching engagements are often broader in scope than individual coaching, which can lead to longer-term and higher-value contracts when positioned effectively.

Rather than requiring more clients, the shift is usually toward deeper work with fewer, more strategic engagements. You can also learn more about the experience of our graduates and their return on investment here: https://pages.coaching.com/team-coaching-testimonials

5. I already have experience with teams. Will this still add value for me?

Yes, especially if you’re looking to bring more structure, depth, and consistency to your work with teams.

Many experienced coaches and consultants come into the program having worked with teams informally. What they often gain is a clearer methodology, stronger contracting language, and a more systemic way of understanding team performance.

This allows them to move from facilitating sessions or advising leaders to working more deliberately with the team as a system over time.

For experienced practitioners, the value is often less about learning something entirely new, and more about strengthening, refining, and elevating how they already work.

6. What results are graduates actually experiencing after completing the program?

You can view results from many course graduates and see how they are applying this work to coach teams on this page. You can also book a consultation with a graduate on our team here.

7. What is the Team Development Essentials and Practitioner Program schedule?

You can view the course schedule here. This course consists of:

  • 6 self-paced modules: Each module is dedicated to a specific topic in team coaching, offering in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical insights. They are released on a specific schedule, and set up linearly, meaning you need to complete them before you can access the following modules.
  • 6 live facilitated Practicum sessions: Following each module you will experience an interactive practicum for hands-on coaching experience offered at various times.
  • 2 live Q&A Sessions with Prof. Hawkins and Dr. Carr: Two live Q&A sessions allow direct interaction with the instructors, as they address yours and others most common questions from the exclusive community.
If you’re moving on to the Practitioner Certification, this will begin in October and the course schedule can be found here.

8. What is the difference between the Team Development Essentials and the Systemic Team Coaching® Practitioner course?

In the Team Development Essentials, we started coaching leaders to better enable their teams, coach the team through the team leader, or how to start with the team.

In the Systemic Team Coaching® Practitioner you will learn how to effectively convey “why team coaching” to a potential client partner, how to expand your practice by coaching a team using the Five Disciplines of high-value creating teams, and SIDER, a model for scoping, contracting, and delivering team coaching work.

You will expand your range of approaches you can use when coaching teams, and the authority, presence, and impact required to be a successful team coach.

After engaging with Systemic Team Coaching® Practitioner, you will gain the ability to coach teams, deliver off-site workshops, and carry out structured team diagnostics.

9. How is this course different from other team coaching certifications?

The Team Development Essentials course, leading to the "Certified in Team Development Essentials" qualification offers a dynamic, live online learning environment that's both flexible and engaging.

The course is grounded in the latest global research in team dynamics and coaching, and it stands out as one of the first to be accredited against international standards specifically for team coaching. By synthesizing a diverse array of approaches, the course is designed to equip coaches, managers, leaders and HRs with both the confidence and competence necessary to address a variety of common team challenges. Additionally, it encourages you to acknowledge the boundaries of their current skills and formulate a personal learning plan for growth within the team coach role.

A significant emphasis of the course is on systemic approaches to team coaching. This perspective equips participants with a broader range of responses and strategies, moving beyond typical linear models. It invites participants to challenge conventional assumptions about teams and team coaching, fostering the development of a unique, evidence-based practice.

Our goal is to offer the highest quality training, shaping participants into team coaches who can create meaningful impacts not only for their clients and teams but also in the broader social context.

10. What are the prerequisites for joining the course?

While prior coaching experience can enhance your learning, a background in team development is not required, as the course is thoughtfully designed to cater to both newcomers and those with some experience in the field.

Those with more extensive team coaching experience may reach out to support@coaching.com to see if they qualify to move straight to the Practitioner level.

11. How much time will I need to invest to be successful in the course?
The course is estimated to take 26 learning hours over the course of 13 weeks. This includes attending the six live Practicum sessions (9 hours) and two live Q&A sessions (2 hours), as well as learning through six self-paced modules (12 hours).

To get the most out of the course, we recommend that you set aside about 2 hours each week to go through the content on your own, and another 2 hours in the weeks where you have your Practicum sessions.
